About Us

Old Basing & Lychpit Carnival

The Old Basing and Lychpit Carnival, as it is called now, began life as a fundraiser for the Scout and Guide groups and later to raise funds for the Old Basing Village Hall. 2020 was supposed to be the 50th anniversary of the carnival which would suggest that it started in 1970 but we have found pictures of a Tug-O-War contest across the river Loddon which took place in 1968 and 1969 (would this sort of fun even be allowed these days?).

Our Story

The Carnival Committee is formed from a group of local volunteers who have contributed some of their spare time to ensure the continued support for the Old Basing & Lychpit Carnival. The committee meets on the first Wednesday of every month to plan and organise each year’s events and we are always looking for new people to join us and inject their experience and ideas.

PARKING

Parking at the recreation ground is very limited and mainly restricted to the disabled and those who have restricted mobility. We strongly encourage people to walk to the carnival but if you must use a car, please follow instructions from the road marshals.

Each year, on carnival day, the parish holds a procession through Old Basing village. This necessitates the closing of some roads for a period of around two hours between 11:00 and 13:00 for the safety of those taking part. The roads subject to the closure order are: Crown Lane from Fiveways (Crown Lane/Hatch Lane/Byfleet Ave./Milkingpen Lane) to The Street (Crown Public House). The Street from Crown Lane to Old Basing Recreation Ground. Access will be maintained for the residents of these roads whilst the Old Basing and Lychpit Carnival is in progress. Anyone using this route is advised to use extreme caution and to follow the instructions of the road marshals. The official Road Closure notice and diversion instructions can be found here….
